Tomb raiders strike again in Sarawak, plundering 17 graves

Sept 16, 2004

V=SIBU: The notorious tomb robbers are back and have plundered at least 30 tombs from two cemeteries here.

In the latest incident, 17 tombs at the Sungai Engkalat-Sungai Aup Iban cemetery, about 20 minutes’ drive from here, were found broken into on Tuesday. Longhouse chief Stanley Gramong lodged a report at the central police station here yesterday.

He said a family out to build a proper concrete tomb for a loved one who died recently discovered the plunder on Tuesday.

Residents from five longhouses in the area sharing the cemetery checked the tombs of their loved ones yesterday.

It is believed that the latest case brought to more than 100 the tombs that had been disturbed in at least three incidents over the past two to three years.

Last month, another 17 tombs at the Catholic cemetery at Salim Road here and an unknown number in Pasai Tengah were also plundered.

Burying the dead, especially the women with jewellery and valuables made of gold, used to be a common practice among the Ibans here and even dentures with teeth made of gold have not been spared.

However, the spate of plundering reported all over the state has discouraged this practice.

On Feb 23 last year, the first public and ritual cursing of the tomb robbers was carried out by angry residents of 12 longhouses in the Penasu and Batu Burak areas, about 18km from here.

Robbers on Feb 16 plundered 26 tombs there and sacrilegiously scattered the remains of the dead all over the cemetery. – Bernama
