Haunted Statues Stolen PDF Print E-mail

September 22, 2004 -- Medieval doers on Long Island have stolen two heavy, life-size statues of knights in armor from a "haunted" local landmark. The wooden warriors stand 6 feet tall, weigh hundreds of pounds and are worth up to $25,000, said Suffolk Detective Lt. Edward Reilly. One knight brandishes a sword, the other a battle ax.

They had been standing guard at the former Normandie Inn in Bohemia since 1929.

"I think eventually they're going to show up on eBay or someplace," said Nick Campitiello, who is turning the building into a showroom for his interior-design firm.

"The reason I want them back is because of the history behind them."

He said a woman named Maria was murdered there in the 1920s, when the place was a speakeasy — and her spirit "is known to haunt the place."

Campitiello has proof.

When he bought the place he spoke to the daughter of the former owner, who related strange events that happened when new carpets were installed.

Foam padding was put down and the doors were locked for the night.

"The next day," she said, "mysterious footprints" were found in the foam.

But Reilly does not suspect ghostly burglars in the statue heist.

The knights apparently put up a valiant struggle. Campitiello said he found one wooden hand in the parking lot.
