Visitors Flock to Cemetery Tour
Evening Mail
Birmingham (UK) September 14, 2005

SO many people visited a city cemetery at its first open day that organisers are considering holding regular walks around the site. Hundreds of people from all over the country turned up to visit Key Hill Cemetery, in the Jewellery Quarter, and queued for guided tours. Pauline Roberts, who chairs the Friends of Key Hill Cemetery, said: "We were amazed that so many people came despite the weather. Historian Chris Upton had up to 70 people at a time wanting to go on his guided tours.

"It's made us realise that there is a genuine interest in this historic site and it's worth campaigning to restore it.'

More than pounds 1 million is needed for vital repairs to Key Hill. It contains some of Birmingham's most famous sons including former Lord Mayor Joseph Chamberlain and John Henderson, who built Crystal Palace.

Pauline added: "We had people from London, the north of England and even one woman from Australia who arranged her holiday to coincide with the open day because she was looking for relatives' graves.

"We hope to republish a book on the cemetery written in 1925 by a former chaplain Edward Manning and update this with more detail FACTFILE

THE cemetery was once called the Westminster Abbey of the Midlands because of its roll call of famous occupants.

Key Hill opened in 1836 and is one of the country's oldest cemeteries.

It contains 60,000 graves and was closed to burials in the 1980s
