Joan of Arc relics 'are mummies' PDF Print E-mail

Sacred relics thought to belong to Joan of Arc are forgeries fashioned from Egyptian mummies, scientists have claimed. The holy artefacts, believed to have survived the pyre upon which the French heroine was burned at the stake in 1431, are recognised by the Church as genuine.

But forensic experts who were allowed to test the remains dated the relics to more than 2,000 years ago – not the 15th century.

Carbon-dating tests revealed the presence of the kind of materials used to embalm mummies in ancient Egypt. Dr Philippe Charlier said he was 'astonished' by his findings. 'I would never have thought that it could be from a mummy,' he added.

Joan was burned at the stake as a witch in Rouen, Normandy, and was canonized in 1920. The relics were discovered in 1867 in a jar in the attic of a Paris pharmacy. Among them were a human rib, chunks of what look like blackened wood, a 15cm fragment of linen and a cat's thigh bone.
