Katrina memorial could be built on LSU property in New Orleans PDF Print E-mail

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A memorial to honor the victims of Hurricane Katrina — and to bury the unclaimed, unknown dead from the storm — may be built on land owned by LSU in New Orleans, on a piece of property that houses the Louisiana State Charity Cemetery.

The granite and bronze memorial will mimic the shape of the hurricane, with paths winding into the site, and the hurricane's eye would be marked with a ring of benches surrounding a bronze sculpture of angels.

Six mausoleums will house the remains of 126 unidentified victims of the storm, under the design developed for the New Orleans Katrina Memorial Corporation and described to the LSU Board of Supervisors.

The board agreed Friday to let LSU System President William Jenkins look into the proposal, evaluate it and determine whether the university should erect the memorial on its property.

Orleans Parish Coroner Frank Minyard, who is responsible for the unidentified remains of people who died during the hurricane or its aftermath, wants to create a permanent memorial to the storm's victims in New Orleans. He helped form the nonprofit Katrina memorial organization to solicit donations for the construction costs — estimated at $1.5 million or more.

More than 1,500 Louisiana residents died during the Aug. 29, 2005, hurricane or its aftermath.

A separate legislatively created memorial commission is considering how to build a state Katrina memorial.
