Mausoleum planned for 100 bodies still unclaimed after Hurr. Katrina

New Orleans--A mausoleum is being planned for the 100 unclaimed Hurricane Katrina dead and a memorial to honor all the victims of the killer storm. New Orleans Katrina Memorial Corporation will kickoff a nationwide campaign to raise $1.5 million for the project, the corporation said in a news release Monday.

There are 100 unclaimed bodies from Katrina in Louisiana, said Orleans Parish coroner Dr. Frank Minyard. DNA has been collected in an effort to identify 30 of the bodies, he said. The other 70 have been identified, but no one has claimed the bodies.

Plans for the mausoleum and memorial were to be announced on Tuesday.

More than 1,700 people died during the Aug. 29, 2005, hurricane and its aftermath.
