KACT3 NEWS

NEW ORLEANS -- A crew loading hurricane debris onto a truck found a human skull and bones, and investigators are trying to determine if they are from a victim of Hurricane Katrina.
The debris-clearing crew found the bones about 12:30 p.m. Monday, said John Gagliano, chief investigator for the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office.

He said Julia Powers, an anthropologist paid by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, found bones and other human remains in the area of eastern New Orleans where the crew was working. She will try to find out whether the remains are from one person and to learn the identity of the person, Gagliano said.

More than 1,500 Louisiana residents died during the hurricane or its aftermath, including some who died after evacuating.

Grave Epigrams

The memory of ye Just is Blessed.
Oh! what is frail and Mortal Man
Or any of his Dying race,
That God should think to entertain
And freely save him by his Grace.
