Cemeteries Still In Chaos PDF Print E-mail

Vermillion Parish, Louisiana

Cemeteries in Vermilion Parish are still in disarray after Hurricane Rita shuffled tombs in many graveyards. There are crypts where loved ones are not yet at peace in Mouton Cove.

"That might be a relative of mine we used to call Aunt Ethel," says Danny LaPoint as he points to a cracked tomb, covered with plywood to hide his relative's visible skeleton. LaPoint has many relatives buried in the cemetery. "In fact," he says, "on this first row what you're seeing here destroyed is a lot of my daddy's relatives."

LaPoint has been somewhat of the point man working to get the cemetery back in order. He worked with FEMA'S disaster mortuary teams when they were gathering information. "They removed some and took them for what they call DNA testing," he says. LaPoint says many people buried in the cemetery were scattered in a ditch across the street. Almost eight months after Rita, he's anxious to find out when his family and others will once again rest in peace. "It hurts, you know."

According to the Louisiana Family Assistance Center, which was created after last year's hurricanes, none of the cemeteries damaged by Katrina and Rita are back to normal. The cemetery division, which operates under the Family Assistance Center, is waiting to hear if the Department of Health and Human Services will fund returning tombs to their original spots.

Taphophiles Speak

Have you decided on eternal repose?

Quote Repository

I will not plead
If I deny, I am condemned already,
In courts where ghosts appear as witnesses
And swear men's lives away. If I confess,
Then I confess a lie, to buy a life,
Which is not life, but only death in life.

William Wadsworth Longfellow

Grave Epigrams

Lyke as this marble now doeth hyde
The bodies of theisse twayne
So shall not thou on earth lyve longe
But turne to dust agayne.
Then learne to dye and dye to lyve
As theisse two heare examples give.

Over Peover, England 1573
