Charge dropped in cremation case PDF Print E-mail

Calgary - The Crown has dropped fraud charges against a regional director of a funeral home accused of not cremating people in caskets purchased for them. The Crown told the court Monday that there was insufficient evidence linking David Scanlan to the case. They had alleged he knew about the wrongdoing at Leyden's Funeral Home.

A year ago, Leyden's and its owner Trillium Funeral Service Corporation were charged with fraud, false pretence and theft under the Fair Trading Act. The charges were based on allegations that people were not cremated in the caskets that were purchased for them.

Customers also complained that they were quoted an inflated price, which was then reduced, creating the appearance of a deal. Government services' spokesman Eoin Kenny said a separate price book was shown to Asian customers.

Scanlan is the western regional director of Arbor Memorial Services, of which Trillium is a subsidiary.
