PORT CHARLOTTE -- Sometimes, not even death acts as a reprieve from pickpockets.
According to a Charlotte County sheriff's report, Gerald J. McLean's wallet was removed from his pocket when the 74-year-old's body was delivered to Farley Funeral Home in March.

Justin Andrew Light, 25, who delivered the body to the funeral home, tried to use McLean's credit card to buy a laptop computer from the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Port Charlotte on March 12, according to the report. When the cashier saw that Light's signature did not match the one on the back of the card, she asked to see his driver's license.

Light, of Port Charlotte, told the cashier he needed to get his identification from his vehicle, left and never returned, the report states. The transaction was voided.

A few days later, he went to the Venice Police Department and gave a written confession that he had taken McLean's credit card and attempted to use it. The Venice police contacted Charlotte County officials.

On Monday, Light turned himself in after he learned there was a warrant for his arrest at the state attorney's office waiting to be signed.

Because Light is accused of using the stolen card and signing the sales receipt as if it were his own, he is charged with fraudulent use of a credit card, according to the records.

Mary McLean, Gerald's wife, said she hopes Light gets jail time.

McLean's body was removed from his home by Light, an employee of Brasota Mortuary Transfer, because Farley's Funeral Home was too busy to pick it up that night, said funeral home co-owner David Farley.

Brasota Mortuary Transfer refused to comment. According to Farley, Light, a former corrections officer, was fired immediately.

Light was released from the Charlotte County jail Monday on $2,500 bail. He did not answer phone calls Tuesday.
