Medical Examiner Accidentally Switched Bodies

SAN ANTONIO -- The bodies of two men who were killed in a car crash and whose bodies were mistakenly switched and buried in the wrong plots were exhumed Tuesday. A backhoe dug out the body of Jermain Ramirez, whose mother's legal battle led to the exhumation. His body was mistakenly buried at San Jose Cemetery.

Ramirez was supposed to have buried at San Fernando Cemetery, where the body of his friend, Juan Macias, was laid to rest.

The pair was killed in a traffic crash in April.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office admitted to switching the bodies by mistake.

Ramirez's mother, Martina Dominguez, sued the medical examiner's office and two funeral homes for the mistake.

A family spokesman said Tuesday he hopes the exhumation and eventual burial in the correct plot will help Dominguez heal.

"It's been pretty tough," said Kevin Loudon. "Closure is not there for her, yet, and hopefully this is going to get it to that point."

Loudon said both families plan to hold gravesite services.
