Former St. Petersburg congressman buried in wrong grave
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A cemetery wants to move the remains of a former congressman because it buried him in a plot . reserved for a woman who recently died.

Officials at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens acknowledged it buried U.S. Rep. William C. Cramer in the wrong spot after his death last October - an error that has delayed the burial of Lois Newby Claussen. She died last week at 80 and was supposed to be buried next to her husband.

After Claussen's family and friends gathered for a graveside service this week, her body had to be returned to a funeral home while the cemetery searches for a solution to the problem

Sara Cramer, the congressman's widow, said the cemetery asked for her permission to move her husband's body eight feet to make room for Claussen, but she won't let them do it. The Republican congressman, who served from 1954 to 1970, is buried beneath a shady oak tree, with his mother, father and two sisters.

"I truly am sympathetic to the other family," Sara Cramer said. "My heart goes out to them. But I feel the cemetery should resolve it without disturbing my husband."

Cemetery officials said they don't know what went wrong. One possible explanation is that when Cramer was buried, workers did not want to cut through the oak's large roots and placed his grave site in the space that had been reserved for Claussen.

"This, unfortunately, was just a mistake," said Scott Stevens, regional director of Stewart Enterprises, which owns Woodlawn. "We're still working on a solution."

The mix up has anguished Claussen's family, a friend said. She wanted to be buried next to her husband, who died in 1968.

"For this to happen to that darling lady is horrible," said 82-year-old Mary Fitzsimmons, a neighbor.
