Plot Next To Man's Wife Taken By Someone Else

April 5, 2005

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. -- A grieving South Florida family says the loss of their beloved father became even more tragic when someone else ended up buried next to their mother. Ronald Harris says his father's dying wish was to be buried next to his wife of 52 years. He had bought the plot next to his wife Wilma's grave when she passed away in 1997.

Last week, when Sylvester Harris passed away, his sons went to Graceland South to make the final arrangements, and they were told someone else was buried in the plot their father paid for.

That's when Ronald and Sylvester Harris Jr. called the Problem Solvers.

Reporter Jeff Weinsier checked out the situation with Graceland, and found out someone else had, in fact, been buried next to Wilma Harris -- so recently that the sod hadn't even been replaced.

Family members told Local 10 that Graceland South has offered to exhume Wilma Harris's body and move her to another part of the cemetery to be next to her husband. But family members say exhuming this body is unacceptable.

"It's just despicable, and I'm not going to accept it," Ronald Harris said.

Weinsier tracked down Graceland Memorial Parks general manager.

"I understand they are upset," McPhillips said. "I'm a human being. I conveyed this to the Harris family. I've spoken to them. I have expressed to them how unfortunate this is and I understand them. I have done all I can to assist them."

The Problem Solvers took it a step further and contacted Alderwoods Group out of Cincinnati.

The group's Web site says they are second largest operator of funeral homes and cemeteries in the country, and they own Graceland South.

A spokesperson says Alderwoods bought the cemetery back in 2000, and there are no records that Harris purchased the plot next to his wife back in 1997. But Weinsier saw those records for himself.

Now, the company tells Local 10 that they are trying to reach the family of the person buried in Harris's plot to see if they are willing relocate their loved one.

In the meantime, Sylvester and Ronald Harris say their father won't rest in peace until his dying wish is fulfilled.

State officials say it is against Florida law to "double sell" a cemetery plot and they will be investigating whether this was a true error.
