Army veteran Paul Dlubac purchases flagpoles for Simsbury Cemetery

By:Glenn M. Shafer , Staff Writer 07/09/2004

The town of Simsbury is lucky to have a resident like Paul Dlubac. Paul noticed that the Simsbury Cemetery had no flagpoles and as a U.S. Army veteran, he felt that was not right.

So, to honor the veterans buried in the cemetery dating back to the American Revolution, he bought two flag poles from an Avon company and had them installed.

The first was installed in November of 2002, but Paul insisted in no publicity. The second was installed this year. "Paul has always been a very generous person," said Simsbury Cemetery Superintendent Richard Curtiss. "He was a career man and he is a very patriotic guy."

Paul's two brothers, John and Mike, shared in the cost of the flagpole in the older section of the cemetery. The second flagpole in the newer section of the cemetery was purchased by Paul to honor his wife and four sons. In addition to purchasing the flag poles, Paul established a flag fund to replace the flags as they deteriorate. Paul and John work part time in the cemetery cutting lawns. Paul would not reveal how much the flagpoles cost to buy and install. "I didn't do this for any type of recognition," he said.

About one year ago, Paul approached Curtiss with the idea of installing two flagpoles. "Naturally, we had no objections," joked Curtiss.

Paul served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1972, from the Korean War through the Vietnam War. When discussing his experiences in the service, Paul quickly states, "I don't tell war stories." He did acknowledge that for many years after Vietnam, veterans were not treated well and only recently with the U.S. involvement in the Iraq, people are starting to value the opinions of veterans.

"Paul has been very active and a great friend to the Simsbury Cemetery Association," said its president, Jackson Eno. "He is a wonderful person with a heart as big as gold. He is interested in Simsbury a lot more than most people."

Paul has been a native of Simsbury ever since. After his time in the service, he worked for the State Police and has been active in veterans affairs, honoring all Connecticut recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

On top of each flagpole is an American eagle. "There are four kinds of people in life," said Paul. "Doers, talkers, leaders, and followers. I'm a doer." And Simsbury is lucky to have such a man.

The Simsbury Cemetery dates back to 1688 and the Simsbury Cemetery Association took over control of the cemetery in 1853.
