A Taphophilia Thank You...

Taphophilia (dot) Com would not be possible without the knowledge, experience and talent of DarkestWeb. From
its conception and early development, DarkestWeb
was faced with many challenges; from inspiring and motivating, to providing guidance and direction. The continued dedication and support has produced results greater than ever expected, and for this, I owe a huge debt of gratitude.

Armys mortuary unit brings home Americas war dead PDF Print E-mail

Soldiers from the Army's 54th Quartermaster Company have a job most people wouldn't choose: finding America's war dead and getting them home.

The roots of the mortuary unit date back to 1923. "It doesn't take a special breed of person. It just takes a person who cares. That's what Americans are. It's what we are. We care about each other and one of our vows is to never leave anyone behind," said 1st Sgt. Mark Newberg.

In the woods of Fort Lee, near Petersburg, a small platoon takes part in an exercise -- a Chinook helicopter went down about eight hours earlier. The recovery team has to search for the remains of the missing pilot.

It is mission accomplished, and now the hard work begins. Team members meticulously record every detail of their discovery that becomes crucial data for a positive i.d. later.

In the drill, the team carefully carries out the victim. There's procedure for that, too. A body is always carried feet first and taken to a mobile receiving station. There, another team conducts further identification procedures.

"Bringing soldiers home is probably the most honorable thing I will ever do for anyone," acknowledges SPC. Bobbie Espinoza.

Other members feel the same way. "it's very important for me to bring our fallen comrades home," said SSgt. Tom Ivy.

"it's very important work. It sends a message that we care about our brothers in arms," noted SFC Ronald Holliday.

Marjorie and Leon Hickey know just how important that is. Their son, Marvin, was killed in Vietnam in 1966.

"Oh, I knew he was at rest. I mean, really it made me feel better knowing they did that for him," Mrs. Hickey said.

Rose Merry Tuazon's pain is much more recent, having buried her son, Andrew, who died in iraq in May. She thanks the 54th for all their good work.

"And it does bring closure to the family because they did a great job when they took care of Andrew when Andrew came home."

Mrs. Tuazon would've celebrated Andrew's 22nd birthday in a few weeks.

The cemetery is an open space among the ruins, covered in winter with violets and daisies. It might make one in love with death, to think that one should be buried in so sweet a place.
