More than 60 years after 40 US servicemen died when a military transport crashed near Mackay in north Queensland, the victims of the World War II tragedy will be honoured with a memorial at Arlington National Cemetery, an association of their family members said today.
"Our group of military veterans and casualty families will have some measure of closure next June 14th," Bakers Creek Memorial Association spokesman Professor Robert Cutler said.

The US Air Force B-17C Flying Fortress was transporting troops back to Papua New Guinea on June 14, 1943, after some rest and recreation in Mackay.

It plunged to earth two minutes after take-off, killing 40 of the 41 servicemen on board.

At the time of the crash, the disaster was kept secret by wartime censorship restrictions, and for years after the war ended it was kept classified.

Many of the victims' families only found out about the circumstances of how and where the servicemen died recently.

A memorial was erected in 1992 at the crash site at Bakers Creek near Mackay.

But the Bakers Creek Memorial Association has long been campaigning for the fallen servicemen to be remembered on American soil "to set the record straight".

Next month on the 63rd anniversary of the crash a marker laid on a pedestal of pink Queensland granite will be unveiled at the Arlington cemetery in Virginia, where former US president John F. Kennedy and military casualties since the American Revolution are buried.

Professor Cutler, of George Washington University in the US, whose father supervised the loading of the passengers on the fateful flight, has campaigned for the disaster to be properly commemorated.

"In recent years, thanks to the tireless work of people in Australia and the US, the full magnitude of the disaster has been finally uncovered, making the crash somewhat of an historic event," he said.

Several leading US politicians, including former Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole, supported the campaign for the Arlington memorial marker.
