Taphophilia (dot) Com would not be possible without the knowledge, experience and talent of DarkestWeb. From
its conception and early development, DarkestWeb
was faced with many challenges; from inspiring and motivating, to providing guidance and direction. The continued dedication and support has produced results greater than ever expected, and for this, I owe a huge debt of gratitude.

Cemetery buries Vietnam messages and mementos PDF Print E-mail

Placing a red carnation into a vault was a simple task, but it brought tears to Vietnam veteran Gary Lewan's eyes. The blossom represented his deep gratitude for 58,000 comrades who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.

"It's a very emotional experience," Lewan said. "People who haven't been out there (in war) don't know what it means."

Lewan was among a dozen veterans and other residents who added flowers, flags and other personal items to a cache being buried Wednesday afternoon at Chapel Hill Gardens West in Oakbrook Terrace as a tribute to the fallen soldiers.

"I'm living here in a free America. These soldiers fought and died for us," said JoAnn McCallister, who wears a bracelet inscribed with the name of POW Dale Herreid of Mooseheart. The Westmont woman was going to bury it Wednesday in his honor but changed her mind while standing over the vault.

"He's still missing," she said. "I've got to wear it until he comes home. I'm probably going to wear it until I die."

The cemetery held a special service to bury numerous notes, medals, photos and mementos that were left at the traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall during its Memorial Day weekend stop at Chapel Hill.

"Many new friends were made ... and memories were shared," said David Klein of Chapel Hill. "We were honored to become part of the extended family."

The mementos were placed into a red, white and blue vault that was blessed by the Rev. Ron Yurcus before it was lowered into the ground in the veterans section of the cemetery.

"May we remember all those names on that wall. May we remember all of those who died in any war," Yurcus said.

The tribute also included addresses by dignitaries, a reading of a poem about the wall written by Naperville veteran Jack Shiffler's daughter Kerri, a balloon launch, an honor guard, "Amazing Grace" played by a bagpiper and taps on tape.

"It's a nice way to end the event," said Colleen Lamb, wall coordinator for the cemetery.
