Mistaken Identity Found At Funeral Home PDF Print E-mail

A family, who prepared for a funeral service Wednesday afternoon, is now at the bedside of their son. This, while another family is mourning the loss of their son, who they thought was alive. Police notified the family of Patrick Bement that he was killed in an accident on Saturday, and the family of Nathaniel Smith that he was in a comatose state near Traverse City.

Visitation for Patrick was held on Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday night, after the mothers of Patrick and Nathan Smith realized there could be a mix-up, police closed the doors at the funeral home to take fingerprints from the body inside the closed casket.

That's when they found out they had a case of mistaken identity. The Bements are now at Patrick's bedside, and instead of the funeral planned for Wednesday afternoon, they asked Calvary Church to hold a prayer vigil for all three people in the car accident.

Those attending the service learned about the mistake this morning, and were shocked that Nathan was killed.

Nathan's friend, Kyle Olsen, told FOX 17 News at Ten, "It's hard that I found out that my best friend of many years is dead. I just have to pray and hope for the best for Pat."

Nathan played the drums, guitar and bass. Nick DeVries, a friend since elementary school, says he regrets a recent disagreement he had with Nathan.

Nick told FOX 17, "I was in a fight with Nate over government, of all things, with Nate... and we hadn't talked for three weeks just because of that. And now, I can't talk to him again."

Counseling will be available Thursday at Forest Hills Northern High School. Funeral arrangements are being made by Nathan Smith's family.

Ay, but to die and go we know not where; To lie in cold obstrution and to rot; This sensible warm motion to become A kneaded clod; and the delighted spirit To bathe in fiery floods or to reside In thrilling regions of thick-ribbed ice; To be impison'd in the viewless winds, And blown with restless violence round about The pendant world.

William Shakespeare -
