Austrailia - A former Perth chef jailed for life for the murder of aspiring British model Sally Anne Bowman has launched an appeal against his conviction, his lawyers said today. Mark Dixie, 37, had admitted having sex with the 18-year-old's corpse but denied killing her. He was jailed in February after a trial at the Old Bailey and was told he would not be eligible for parole for 34 years.

Julie Cooper, a partner with law firm Maclaverty Cooper Atkins, confirmed that Dixie had lodged an appeal.

Bowman was stabbed outside her home shortly after being dropped off by her boyfriend in September 2005.

Her mother, Linda, criticised Dixie for making the appeal.

"He's a coward who loves putting us through pain,'' she told the Sun newspaper.

British police believe Dixie may have attacked and killed other women while he travelled around Australia between 1993 and 1999, working as a cook in bars and restaurants.

Dixie became a suspect in the Perth Claremont serial killings, when two young women were murdered and another disappeared in the upmarket suburb between January 1996 and April 1997.

But West Australian police eventually ruled him out as a suspect.
