Funeral Home Owners Discover "House Of Horrors" PDF Print E-mail

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- The new owners of an Orange County funeral home say they discovered a "house of horrors" inside. They claim bodies and cremated remains had been abandoned. The doors closed at Brinson's Funeral home a few days after the new owners said they made a gruesome discovery inside. According to Demetress Morales, after her company RIB Investments bought the home, she found the bodies of three men. Two were hidden in the coffin room and another inside a cardboard box.

"I thought that was unbelievable, especially after I found the dates and how long they had been here," Morales said. "For weeks."

She also uncovered cremated remains stranded at the crematory. She said her company also discovered headstones, death certificates and insurance refunds had been paid for but not delivered. And, she said, that was not all.

"Everything that was an asset of Brinson's Funeral Home of Orlando was in the process of being repossessed," she said.

There was another bizarre twist when the investment company received a voicemail warning from a woman who claimed she really owned the funeral home.

"If you step foot in that building one more time, I will have you arrested. I swear to God," a message left said according to Morales.

The woman claimed to be Gwendolyn Jackson, whose husband Arthur had been a previous owner. However, at the time of the sale, he was not listed on corporate records filed with the state.

The new owners called in state regulators to investigate the conditions they found and then filed a complaint asking the courts to end the ownership dispute.

The man who had sold the funeral home, Reginald Hicks, didn't respond to questions from Action 9. Arthur and Gwendolyn Jackson did not respond to calls either.

In the meantime, the present owners face even more problems. Dozens of bags of cremated remains that apparently were never claimed were now stacked on shelves and stuffed in boxes on the floor. In some cases, ashes had spilled out of the containers.

"Why are they in this funeral home?" Action 9's Todd Ulrich asked Morales.

"That's a good question, but one I can't answer."

The new owners had the embalmed bodies they found cremated and it's contacting loved ones.

Florida Financial Services has put the home's license on hold.
