Man Claims Crypts Are Leaking, Bugs Coming From Graves

March 13, 2006

PALM BAY, Fla. -- A man who lost his mother and father claims the crypts at a Palm Bay cemetery are leaking and foul odors and bugs are coming from his parents' graves. The man said the conditions at Fountainhead Memorial Park are so bad, family members can't visit their loved ones. For Matt Conroy, the problem was disturbing and offensive the day of his mother's funeral. Channel 9 found similar conditions at the cemetery just this past week.

The Chapel of Peace mausoleum is anything but peaceful for Matt and family. After his mom died three months ago, there was a funeral service inside the mausoleum where, Matt claims, the smell and the bugs were overwhelming.

"When we first walked in the door, the odor was apparent," he said.

According to Matt, an employee told him the smell was embalming fluids from leaking crypts. That attracted bugs called crypt gnats, drawn to decaying remains.

Matt says the gnats, like ones Action 9 recently detected, had swarmed guests at his mothers funeral service.

Action 9 first investigated Matt's complaints of crypt gnats and odors when his father died 10 years ago. Back then, his mother felt sick visiting the mausoleum.

At the time, Fountainhead owner SCI told Channel 9 it checked dozens of crypts and two were resealed. Now Matt is demanding another investigation.

A company spokesman denied any environmental hazard, but said it would review pest control and the ventilation system.

That's not enough for Matt Conroy.

"I believe they know what's wrong here and [should] simply fix it out of respect to family members," he said.

The day Action 9 interviewed Matt at the mausoleum, you could smell air freshener mixed with a strong chemical odor.

Matt has filed a complaint with Florida's Department of Financial Services, which regulates cemeteries.
