A Taphophilia Thank You...

Taphophilia (dot) Com would not be possible without the knowledge, experience and talent of DarkestWeb. From
its conception and early development, DarkestWeb
was faced with many challenges; from inspiring and motivating, to providing guidance and direction. The continued dedication and support has produced results greater than ever expected, and for this, I owe a huge debt of gratitude.

Forensic Dentist Identifies Those Lost In Disaster PDF Print E-mail

GLASSBORO “If we are going to look at a certain individual, sometimes we see something like a cap on a tooth and that's a unique item.”

A capped tooth, that was sometimes the only way to identify the dead left in Katrina's wake. Bodies left submerged in water and in extreme heat were unrecognizable. This is when Glassboro dentist Dr. Allan Rayden stepped in.

Dr. Raden is a forensic dentist who uses teeth to I.D. the dead.

He explained, “It's faster than DNA and every bit as accurate.”

After the September 11th attacks, Dr. Raden went to New York to put his expertise to work.

Raden is part of a FEMA mobile mortuary team that travels to natural disasters around the country.

In New York the team had plenty of medical records to rely on, but few bodies.

In Gulf Port, Mississippi it was exactly the opposite.

“Everything was just leveled. It was flattened,” Dr. Raden told CBS-3.

The limitations have made it difficult to identify all of the more than 13 hundred people killed by Hurricane Katrina; still Dr. Raden believes his two weeks spent in the South were worth it.

“If I could help somebody get a little bit of closure and get loved ones back in a timely manner, then I think I accomplished my mission,” he concluded.
