LA Coroner Receives $32M For New Crypt, Other Improvements PDF Print E-mail

LOS ANGELES -- The Department of Coroner received $32 million Tuesday to move forward with plans to build a new crypt and make other improvements as a means of reducing overcrowding. The Board of Supervisors approved the funding to build a 4,000-square-foot crypt and reconfigure existing buildings to separate hazardous areas and allocate more space for autopsies.
The board also authorized the Department of Public Works to sign a $2.5 million contract for design and consulting services.

Appearing before county supervisors, the head of the Department of Coroner said a recent caseload increase had subsided, but officials do not know what caused the spike.

"We can probably surmise that the horrendous heat wave that we had probably contributed to that particular spike but nonetheless, today we are seeing a downturn in the spike where the caseload is coming down to a more manageable level," said Anthony Hernandez, director of the Department of Coroner.

At the height of the problem in July, coroner's investigators had a backlog of 142 bodies to examine. As of today, 97 cases were incomplete in some respect.
The coroner's office typically has a a spike in cases at the start of summer, the start of holidays and in January, Hernandez said.

"This was a very unusual spike," Hernandez said. "We typically handle spikes in about a two-week period of time but in this particular case, we had gone six weeks getting beat up by this particular spike and that alarmed us."

To mitigate the problem, coroner officials modified work schedules, had coroner investigators work overtime and hired temporary physicians.

Supervisor Mike Antonovich asked Hernandez to work on a long-term solution and to come back with an update in two weeks.
