Bodies Moved from Hampton Cemetery Angers Family PDF Print E-mail

A Hampton family is upset after a private cemetery owner moved the remains of their loved ones without telling them. But were the land owners obligated to tell the family members before the move? The cemetery in question along Woodland Avenue is more than 100 years old and contained at least 12 members of one Hampton family. Last week all the bodies were removed and reburied in Suffolk.

"As far as we know they took the bodies and threw them in the ground," Jurnard Alsop told WAVY News 10.

Alsop's grandmother, Flossie Young, was one of the loved ones buried in the cemetery nearly 100 years ago. But since then the land on which the cemetery sits has switched owners several times, with the last sale earlier this month. The new owners decided to clear out the land, and Alsop's family was never notified.

According to the lawyers who handled the case, the land owners were not obligated to let the family know they were moving the bodies. And according to city officials, a permit to move the bodies was obtained from the Health Department. However, WAVY News 10 has learned a court order authorizing the move was not obtained from a judge.

The more than 10 bodies in the cemetery were brought to Carver Cemetery in Suffolk.

Alsop says the land owner had no right to move his loved ones without talking to them first.

"If there was a good reason, like there was a problem with the ground, for the benefit for the family, but to up and move them because you want to develop the land, no."

WAVY News 10 spoke with the new land owners who say the previous owner was never able to locate family members of those buried there.
