New school planned for site of historic Dallas cemetery PDF Print E-mail

Should the burial ground of a historic Dallas family be unearthed to make way for new schools?

The dispute over a piece of land in northwest Dallas puts preserving the past on a crash course with plans for the future.

Since the late 19th century, the site has housed the graves of the Letot Family, a name in Dallas history.

Sunny Letot's grandfather established the town of Letot nearby. His large farm included what is now the Calvary Hill cemetery, and land at the center of a dispute.

The Dallas Independent School District wants this 25 acres of undeveloped land next to the Cemetery.

"We have been seeking that land to build a new elementary and junior high school for that area of town," said DISD spokesman Donald Claxton.

But Calvary Hill and the Catholic Diocese don't want to sell, saying they need the land for cemetery expansion.

Last year, the DISD began eminent domain proceedings, and earlier this month a judge ruled that the diocese and the cemetery had to sell the undeveloped land to the school district.

Then Sunny Letot got wind of it, and joined the fight. While the immediate Letot clan rests in one historic plot, she said many others were buried north of the site.

"My family, extended family, uncle, cousins and employees of my family (are there)," Letot said.

She said experts hired by the Diocese back her up.

"Their radar scans indicate remains under the surface," Letot said, pointing to a diagram of the site. "Each of these little red rectangles is a grave."

DISD disputed those studies in court, but not Letot's claims. Still, officials are moving forward with the schools, unclear if they'll discover graves.

"If we find some as we go through this process, we are certainly going to be respectful, and give honor and follow the state law," Claxton said.

"There's no option," Letot said. "You just don't go digging people up. It's not OK - that's appalling."

DISD said it will take care, but before long the dirt will fly.
