Area firefighters helping clear Citizens Cemetery PDF Print E-mail

BRISTOL, Va.-Smoke billowed into the sky Tuesday afternoon as area firefighters burned away the thick brush that covered Citizens Cemetery on Piedmont Avenue.
Firefighters walked over the six-acre plot of land at around 4 p.m. Using a small canister that ignites a mixture of gasoline and diesel fuel, they sprayed sections of the centuries-old black cemetery.

Steve Shelley of the Virginia Department of Forestry oversaw the controlled burn.

"We start at a certain point and create a perimeter," he said. "That helps us control the fire."

The cemetery is the focus of a restoration project by Alice Hulburt and students at Sullins Academy, where she is head of the private school.

Citizens Cemetery is the oldest black graveyard in the city, dating back to the early 1800s when slaves were buried there.

She hopes to finish the work by the cemetery's dedication ceremony on April 28.

"Things are progressing," she said as she watched the flames spread across the hilltop. "It's really getting down to the wire, though."

About two weeks ago, Hulburt approached the city manager to request permission to have a controlled burn involving city firefighters. They eventually agreed to do it along with help from the state forestry department.

"This is a unique opportunity for us to help the city," Shelley said. "Plus, it allows us to run some training exercises."

Two hours later, the job was finished, with nothing but gravestones and a scorched ground remaining.

But for Hulburt, the work is just beginning. Her goal is to lay down new dirt and seed the cemetery with grass by mid-April.

"There's still a lot to do," she said.
