Banganga to undergo makeover PDF Print E-mail

Landscaped gardens, refreshment joints, a meditation centre, parking space and waiting lounge — these are few of the amenities being planned for the Banganga crematorium in Walkeshwar. The 75-year-old crematorium that now has three wooden pyres will soon undergo a lavish makeover and acquire two gas furnaces besides retaining one wooden pyre.

“We will invite designs for the crematorium from architects and will select the best design which a senior architect will then work on,” said Rajesh Kapadia, president of the Malabar Hill Rotary Club. The Rotary Club is sponsoring the entire project.

The crematorium will have a planned internal landscape making full use of the available area. Currently, it doesn’t even have parking space for vehicles and visitors don’t have place to wait while the cremation is on.

A gas crematorium requires only an hour to cremate a body and does not cause pollution. A gas-furnace cremation costs around Rs 100 compared with an electric cremation, which costs Rs 250. Also, the Rotary Club has collaborated with Mahanagar Gas Limited for a 50 per cent discount on pipeline gas which will be used.

“Many residents now prefer going to the Chandanwadi electric crematorium as wood cremations are quite expensive,” Kapadia said.

Meanwhile, the BMC is also planning to set up natural gas and diesel crematoria at Worli, Santacruz, Mulund and Parel. Currently, of the 11 electric crematoria in Mumbai, at least five are not functioning as they don’t have skilled technicians to operate them.

“We had planned to build electric crematoria a few years ago but it didn’t shape up. Electric crematoria consume a lot of electricity and take a long time to heat up,” said Gunwant Seth, leader of opposition in the BMC.
