Taphophilia (dot) Com would not be possible without the knowledge, experience and talent of DarkestWeb. From
its conception and early development, DarkestWeb
was faced with many challenges; from inspiring and motivating, to providing guidance and direction. The continued dedication and support has produced results greater than ever expected, and for this, I owe a huge debt of gratitude.

Coffins exposed in cemetery PDF Print E-mail

CAMBRIDGE BAY, Nunavut - Taloyoak, Nunavut is spending $70,000 to make much needed improvements to its four cemeteries.

Some of the coffins – even some of the bodies – are exposed to the elements. The rocks that covered them apparently moved when the ground shifted. Mike Konstantinou is a missionary worker with the Catholic Church in Taloyoak. Last week, he was in the old Catholic cemetery when he saw a small, unidentified coffin that probably belonged to a baby. He was shocked to discover that there was no lid on it.

Konstantinou says it looked like a dog or bird had picked though the bones. And as of Wednesday, it was still exposed. "I left it because I wasn't sure of what to do and I took it as it wasn't my call as to how to handle it," he says, pointing out that the hamlet is responsible for the cemeteries in Taloyoak.

This isn't the only incident. He says he has seen other graves where the coffin has broken open, exposing the remains.

Taloyoak Mayor Jayko Neeveacheak is aware of the problem. He says the hamlet will do something about it before winter. "Hopefully they'll make new coffins and rebury some of them, just in respect to everybody."

The hamlet is also at work on the new Catholic cemetery. Neeveacheak says they will be building a road halfway to that cemetery later this year.
