Damaged mural successfully peeled off tomb wall PDF Print E-mail

The Cultural Affairs Agency announced Wednesday that it successfully peeled off a mural painting that was drawn on the northern part of the western wall inside the stone chamber of the ancient Kitora tomb in Asukamura, Nara Prefecture. The mural depicts a human body with a dog's head.

The tomb, believed to have been constructed between the late-seventh century and early-eighth century, is known for colorful mural paintings on its interior mortar walls. But the condition of some of the paintings has deteriorated, so the agency began peeling some of the images off the wall Monday to preserve them at another location.

This was the first time that a mural painting at an ancient tomb in this country was removed for preservation at another location.

The agency is examining the best way to preserve peeled paintings in good condition outside the chamber, which marks a change from its initial policy of preserving such paintings at the sites where they are discovered.
