Sometimes it takes a senseless act of destruction to bring out the best in people.
Vandals knocked over as many as 85 headstones at Laurel Hill Cemetery in late March.

But now many of the stones are back in their proper place, thanks to the efforts of a group of volunteers.

Ward 3 Councilor Joel Kaddy helped organize an effort involving about 80 volunteers at the cemetery Saturday.

He estimated that volunteers fixed between 120 and 160 headstones, some of them weighing about a ton.

The volunteers used a crane for some of the large stones, but for others as many as 12 people had to work together to set them back in place.

The cemetery dates back to 1792, according to the city of Fitchburg Web site.

"Really it's a museum, it's not a cemetery," Kaddy said. "This vandalism was the catalyst for getting people to come out and help."

The vandalism has also grabbed the attention of city officials, who say they hope to re-convene the city's Cemetery Commission.

The commission hasn't met for at least a year, Mayor Dan H. Mylott said.

"There's been a heightened awareness about the historical value of our cemeteries," Mylott said. "I think maybe this is the right time to try to put them back into shape."

Lack of money has kept the city from fully maintaining its older cemeteries, Mylott said, and the commission only has one member at present.

Mylott said he is planning to appoint two more members in coming weeks to the commission.

It's good to have a fully-staffed commission.

But the needs of local public cemeteries are greater than a volunteer board can handle on its own.

The mayor must follow up his plans for the panel with a concerted effort to find more money for public cemeteries.

We realize that will be difficult, given the city's budget woes and the outcry from so many sectors -- especially the schools -- for additional funding.

But as Kaddy said: These cemeteries are like museums, places steeped in history and the most cherished of memories.

Surely, preserving them in their proper condition should be a priority.

We're glad to know that all the people who came out to clean up the cemetery this week believe it is.

Have you decided on eternal repose?

The silence that guards the tomb does not reveal God's secret in the obscurity of the coffin, and the rustling of the branches whose roots suck the body's elements do not tell the mysteries of the grave, by the agonized sighs of my heart announce to the living the drama which love, beauty, and death have performed.
