Karachi Christians seek restoration of oldest cemetery PDF Print E-mail

Islamabad, India (IANS) Karachi's oldest Christian cemetery, popularly known as Gora Qabristan, is crumbling and being encroached upon. The Christian community wants it restored, well maintained and declared a heritage site. Located along a major thoroughfare of Karachi, the cemetery, with graves of many native Christians, Britons and other Europeans who participated in the two World Wars, was once noted for its immaculate maintenance.

Many of these graves, beautifully developed with carving on stones along with statuettes, are still the hallmark of the cemetery, The News quoted a local resident Marie D'Souza as saying.

She, however, also referred to encroachments coming up at the site 'with total impunity'.

'We can witness boys of the surrounding localities playing cricket and football here,' Florence, a teacher, said, expressing concern that many cemented graves and a much higher number of epitaphs were severely damaged. The threat was not only manmade -- indifference towards its upkeep had also led to massive and thick growth of grasses and weeds.

The community also drew attention towards the menace of waterlogging and salinity severely threatening the heritage site, the newspaper said.
