SPRINGFIELD - The Massachusetts Historical Commission has issued a 2004 preservation award to the Springfield Park Department for its restoration of the Barney Family Mausoleum at Forest Park. Springfield was Western Massachusetts' lone recipient of 11 awards issued statewide.

"We're proud of being recognized for our effort in restoring Barney Mausoleum," Superintendent of Parks Patrick J. Sullivan said yesterday. "I think it clearly shows that when someone like an Everett Barney leaves both an estate and the funds to maintain the estate, the city does respect that wish to preserve their memory and Barney's intent for the public to enjoy the public space."

The project cost close to $1 million, with a mix of private trust funds and state funds. Sullivan said the city is grateful for funds from the state Department of Environmental Management and Barney trustees.

Rita L. Coppola-Wallace, the department's contract administrator, accepted the preservation award from Secretary of State William F. Galvin during a recent ceremony in Salem. The recipients of the award were honored "for demonstrating an outstanding commitment to preservation in the commonwealth of Massachusetts."

Everett H. Barney built the mausoleum in 1892, which served as a final resting place for himself, his wife and his son. Barney died in 1916.

The mausoleum restoration was "from the ground up," Sullivan said.

The restoration included foundation work, drainage improvements, statue replications, restoration of bronze and granite, and cleaning to counter decades of pollution and acid rain, officials said.
