Memorial for graves gets another green light

Information from: Foster's Daily Democrat, http://www.fosters.com

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. --Another hurdle has been cleared in the long process of memorializing a 300-year-old graveyard for blacks that was discovered during construction work.
Last week, the city's Traffic and Safety Committee gave its blessing to a plan that would close off part of Chestnut Street, where the graves were found during digging for a sewer project in October 2003.

The plan also would create a large landscaped area where the eight graves were found.

A 1705 city map identified the site as an African burial ground, and DNA tests on the remains suggested they probably were from people of African descent.

Construction crews unearthed 13 grave shafts and eight coffins were removed. The coffins were about 6 feet long, and likely used for adults. Some other items, such as smoking pipes, also were excavated.

According to an archaeologists' report, the burial ground was created in 1705 on the outskirts of town. It was used until the 1790s, when the lands began to be bought up and developed.

Vernis Jackson, a member of the city's African Burial Ground Committee, said her group has spoken with engineers and landscape artists, but there has been no determination as to the final look of the memorial.

Some city officials had been concerned about the proposal, saying closing off the street could hamper traffic, create congestion and slow emergency vehicles.

But most said any complications would be minor. The proposal now heads to the City Council for its review and another public hearing.
