Tomb of Arizonas first governor needs repairs PDF Print E-mail

The tomb where Arizona's first governor is buried needs repairs and some people are calling on city officials to pay for the restoration. Long cracks and huge divots scar the once alabaster tiles of the Hunt's Tomb landmark in Papago Park.

The white pyramid-shaped tomb was built in 1932 by Gov. George P. Hunt for his late wife, Helen. He joined her two years later, fulfilling his wish to be buried in a place overlooking the Phoenix metropolitan area.

The 100-member Gov. George P. Hunt chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has lobbied to support the memorial to one of the state's first supporters of women's suffrage.

"It's a shame that the tomb has gotten to where it is," said Helen Bernhard, the chapter's historian who has lobbied state and national officials to pay for restorations. "This was one of Arizona's most important figures, and he deserves better."

Papago Park supervisor Tim Merritt said the memorial's prominence in history is actually what has held back previous restoration attempts.

Merritt said it would cost $3,000 to $4,000 to replace the porcelain tiles lining the 20- by 20-foot pyramid. But beneath the tiles, between the exterior and the hollowed center encasing Hunt's body and six family members, is still a mystery.

"Quite frankly, we don't know what we're dealing with under those tiles," Merritt said. "It's kind of a shot in the dark until we do a study."

Merritt thinks a study must be conducted by a firm that understands historical structures to determine exact restoration costs.

Bernhard, 63, and her fellow chapter members are raising money for the restoration by sewing a quilt to auction at the DAR state convention. The quilt will feature hand-embroidered images of every state's official bird.

"We're trying to do anything we can," Bernhard said. "Hopefully, the city (Phoenix) will match our effort."

Phoenix Councilman Greg Stanton said money could be available if the state allocates money to the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission, which oversees the Arizona Centennial Celebration.

Commission Chairman Richard Sims said the group would likely look into a restoration project.
