Driver Pleads Guilty to Stealing Coffin PDF Print E-mail

Zimbabwe--A Mashfords Funeral Services driver yesterday pleaded guilty to stealing a coffin which he had been instructed to deliver for a burial in Guruve and selling it to dealers in Bindura. Maxwell Mutendebvure admitted to theft before  Harare magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabini and will be sentenced today.

Mutendebvure had driven to Guruve to deliver a coffin bought by Rose Acre Crèche and Pre-school director Ms Rose Chirenje for the burial of her sister.

However, by the time he arrived in Guruve, burial had already taken place and the coffin was no longer required. He was then asked by the customer to take the coffin to his employer's funeral parlour in Bindura for storage in the event of another death in the family.

However, on his way back, Mutendebvure stopped at the home industry site in Bindura where he sold the coffin to dealers.

On arrival at the Harare parlour, he lied to his employer that the coffin had been used.

The matter came to light a week later when Ms Chirenje went to Mashfords to claim the unused coffin after another relative had died at Harare Central Hospital.

Upon receiving the report, Mashfords security officer Mr Robert Makombore investigated and discovered that Mutendebvure had sold the coffin in Bindura.

Ms Chirenje had bought the coffin for $570 000.
