Mourners Hurt as Hearse Overturns PDF Print E-mail

By Alison Purdy, PA News

A hearse carrying a coffin overturned as it was turning into a crematorium, it emerged today. Grieving relatives looked on in horror as the hearse landed on its side, scattering floral tributes across the road after it was hit by a car trying to overtake the funeral cortege.

Three mourners travelling in a funeral car and the hearse driver were injured in the collision.

One man received serious head injuries and two fellow passengers suffered minor injuries.

All three men, together with the hearse driver who suffered head and chest injuries, were taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital for treatment.

The accident happened at around 2pm on Thursday as the hearse turned right into St Faith’s Crematorium, Manor Road, Horsham St Faith’s, near Norwich, Norfolk.

Funeral Directors involved in another service rushed to the crash scene and helped to recover the coffin, which was slightly damaged in the accident.

A crematorium spokeswoman said the service was cancelled and the coffin was taken back to the funeral directors’ where it will remain until arrangements can be made for the ceremony to take place at a later date.

“I can only imagine how the family must have felt,” she said.

“Funeral directors attending a different service loaded the coffin into their hearse and took it back to the chapel of rest where it will remain until a new date can be fixed for the funeral to take place.

“The most important thing is that the coffin and the deceased are being respectfully looked after,” she said.

The driver of the car suffered minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.
