Mystery of funeral urn found in garage
By James Fisher

CLEANING teams made a very unusual discovery while clearing out garages – an urn full of ashes dating back to 1983. They found the brown metal container in Hillcrest, Hatfield, and now police are keen to trace the deceased’s family.

The ashes are of Rose Hogan and are dated January 18, 1983.

A police spokesman told how council staff came to find the urn: “It was in a block of garages the council was cleaning out.

“No-one knows who owns the garages but they had fallen into disrepair and the council had gone in to clear them out.

“There are no contact details for the previous tenants. The council weren’t sure what to do with it so they handed it in to us.”

After the find on March 24, police passed the urn onto funeral directors JJ Burgess and Son, of Hatfield, where it is being stored.

Inspector Chris Sharwood-Smith said: “This is a strange object to have handed in.

“There is undoubtedly a huge sentimental value attached to this urn so we are keen to find any relatives who may have lost it.

“Anyone who thinks the urn may belong to them should contact us via the number below as soon as possible.”

If the ashes have not been claimed by August 1, they will be scattered at Garston Crematorium.
