Sisters Spend Month With Corpse PDF Print E-mail

A putrid smell wafting through a Flushing apartment building led police to a gruesome and bizarre discovery last week. Police found the decomposing body of Gabrielle Durand, 77, in the Franklin Avenue apartment she shared with her two sisters, and a niece, on July 1st. They speculated that the Durand sisters, Clara, 71, and Marie, 73, and 35-year-old Carolina Mitty had lived with the decaying corpse for more than a month.

It’s unclear whether the women’s olfactory senses were in working order, but it was the foul smell, and a strong feeling that something was wrong, that prompted the landlord, Tidor Eldeyi, to contact the police.

Officers arrived at the one-bedroom apartment around 3 p.m., but the sisters refused to let them in. After gaining entrance, reportedly by knocking down the door, the police quickly spotted Durand’s body lying in plain view between the bedroom and hallway.

“We haven’t seen her in a long time,” one of the Durands told an officer, apparently when asked about Gabrielle.

Mitty, who the building superintendent told reporters was once a bright, successful student but had succumbed to illness and was prone to violent fits, had an altercation with the officers at the scene. She was taken to Elmhurst Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

The older women were taken to Queens Hospital Center for treatment.

Neighbors reported the sisters have always been a bit odd. They rarely went out, but when they did, they donned all black. On Halloween they were known for handing out $10 and $20 bills in lieu of candy.
