Talks might result in cellular tower at noted Connecticut cemetery PDF Print E-mail

(Greenwich-AP, July 9, 2006)_ One of Connecticut's most distinguished burial grounds could soon become home to a bit of modern technology -- a cell phone tower.

The Diocese of Bridgeport is negotiating a lease to let T-Mobile install a 110-foot telecommunications tower in Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich.

It's the final resting spot of several notable people, including President Bush's grandfather, U-S Senator Prescott Bush.

Titanic survivor Margaret Graham Moore and T-V host Clayton "Bud" Collyer, host of "To Tell the Truth" and "Beat the Clock," are also buried there.

So is Greenwich murder victim Martha Moxley, who was 15 when she was killed in 1975. Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel has been convicted and imprisoned for her murder.

The Diocese of Bridgeport says it's rejected previous requests by telecommunications providers to allow towers there because it didn't want to offend families of people buried in the cemetery.

But they agreed this time.

They say that's because the tower would be disguised as a flagpole and placed in a secluded site, away from the grave plots near the mausoleum.
