FERGUS MACNEILL

17 February 2006
An Inverness man has taken the highly unusual step of putting his mother's ashes on the internet auction website eBay.
It is a bid to fulfil her last wishes of being taken to different countries worldwide.

Devoted son Glen Beaton decided on the move after learning of mother Margaret's love of other countries.

She had spent her lifetime travelling with her soldier husband Donald, a Regimental Sergeant Major.

Mr Beaton, 44, has placed his mother's last remains in a glass urn and is advertising on his own personal eBay site for people willing to take portions of her ashes and place them in special spots across the globe, but in particular the US, Australia and New Zealand.

But he has stressed that no one will be charged for taking his mum's ashes as even when they bid 1p they will not have to pay up.

Mr Beaton explained he had to put the item on at a penny in order to satisfy the rules of eBay and anyone bidding more than 1p will see their bids retracted by him.

Dismissing suggestions that the move would be viewed as a wacky stunt, Mr Beaton, of Druid Road, in Inverness, said last night: "I have done this for a genuine reason. It is just a loving son's way of fulfilling his mother's last wishes.

"My father was in the Army and he left in 1979 but my mother really missed the travelling. So far she is going to a ranch at Tulsa and to Hughton, Lake Michigan.

"She also might be going to Australia and hopefully Canada as well, but I really want to hear from someone from New Zealand as that was one of her favourite places."

Mrs Beaton died aged 72 on March 14, 2004, her husband Donald, 71, one year before.

Mr Beaton is currently waiting for contact from somebody either living in, or going to New Zealand.

And also on eBay Mr Beaton has placed an item very close to himself up for sale - his soul.

Describing himself as an atheist, Mr Beaton continued: "That is wacky and that's why I'm doing it, it's what eBay is about, and I'm up to £16 at the moment.

Mr Beaton was angry at criticism of his move to disburse his mother's ashes.

"Whoever read the listing about my mother didn't read it properly. I have tried to put it on for free but I couldn't do that, so I had to put it on at a penny just to keep the listing on.

"I make no profit at all from the auction. There are no charges to any bidder as I do not intend to profit from my mother's passing. I just want to fulfil her wishes."
