South Africa--A Mossel Bay undertaker's morbid sense of humour backfired when she was dismissed for taking what looked like a dolled-up corpse to an end-of-year party to scare a colleague's husband. Colleagues shocked by what appeared to be gross disrespect for the dead complained to the undertakers' head office, but Leonie Muller said she had used a mannequin. She also took it to her disciplinary hearing to prove her innocence.

After the hearing Muller, who had been an Avbob agent in Riversdale for four years, was told to move out of her flat on the company's property by the end of this week.

Colleagues believe she will move back to her parents' home in Mossel Bay.

Avbob's head office had received a written complaint on June 30 alleging that Muller was guily of gross misconduct, spokesperson Marius du Plessis said.

A disciplinary hearing, at which testimony from witnesses was heard, was held in Riversdale on July 10.

Du Plessis said although it could not be determined with certainty whether the "body" had been a corpse or a mannequin, Muller's behaviour had been ruled "improper" and her employment contract ended.

"The board and management of Avbob extend their sympathy and apology to the public, its clients or any other persons who may have been traumatised by the former agent's behaviour," Du Plessis said.

Rey von Ronge, secretary of the National Funeral Directors' Association (NFDA), said all reputable funeral organisations had strict codes of conduct on respecting the dead and their next of kin.

The NFDA is an industry watchdog, specialising in resolving disputes between undertakers and the public.

"We have to protect the integrity and honour of the industry, because there is not much in terms of legislation. We have to wait for complaints from the public before we can take steps."

Von Ronge said the law did not regulate tasteless behaviour by funeral agents.
