New Mandai Crematorium to replace Mount Vernon in July PDF Print E-mail

SINGAPORE : The new S$23 million Mandai Crematorium is set to replace the 40-year-old Mount Vernon Crematorium from July 1.

While the crematorium will stop operating, Mount Vernon will still be open to the public as the columbarium is not moving yet.

The minimalist building and modern landscaping of the Mandai Crematorium welcome you as you disembark for the final farewells of a loved one.

An escalator brings you to one of four service halls.

Each can seat over a 100 people, in tiers, in the fully air-conditioned facility to give you a bird's eye view of the proceedings.

The new facility can handle some 50 cremations a day, up from the nearly 30 which Mount Vernon now handles.

With a high ceiling and natural light streaming in, it provides a bright area for last rites.

Much thought went into designing the building to suit the flow of the proceedings and the comfort of the bereaved.

For example, the process of delivering the casket into the cremator is fully automated and up to 40 people can watch this from the Viewing Room.

"We've placed very close attention to the needs, especially the emotional needs of the people who visit the crematorium," said S Satish Appoo, acting head (environmental health), National Environment Agency.

"We've tracked the emotional levels of the next-of-kin at each phase of the ceremony, and we found that immediately after the cremation ceremony itself, that is when they are in a very heightened state of emotions."

So there are Quiet Rooms for family members to compose themselves before meeting well-wishers in the Waiting Hall.

There are also six blocks in the columbarium, with over 77,000 niches -- double the capacity of Mount Vernon.

The total number of niches in government facilities is now over 327,000; 230,000 are not occupied.

While there are new niches at Mandai, the NEA says there are no plans at this point in time to close the one at Mount Vernon.

When the closure is confirmed, the government will be giving the next-of-kin ample two years' notice before moving all the ashes to Mandai free of charge.

The family members can also decide to move the ashes of their loved ones to a columbarium of their own choice, but at their own cost. - CNA

The living come with grassy tread To read the gravestones on the hill; The graveyard draws the living still, But never anymore the dead. The verses in it say and say: 'The ones who living come today To read the stones and go away Tomorrow dead will come to stay.'
