No Charges After Black Cemetery is Bulldozed

CHARLESTON (AP) - Police say there isn't enough evidence to pursue criminal charges in the alleged bulldozing of graves in one of Wadmalaw Island's oldest black cemeteries. Charleston County sheriff's Lieutenant Paul Tittle says the cemetery's age, a lack of records and few witnesses hampered investigators. The investigation began when property owner William Baker gave deputies documents and skeletal remains he had found on the land. The previous owner Olivia Palmer says Baker actually destroyed the cemetery and lied to deputies to cover it up. Both parties have sued each other in civil court.
