The W. S. Hancock Society wishes to announce a one-day symposium to held at Montgomery Cemetery, Norristown, Pennsylvania on Saturday, August 14th beginning at 10 a.m. TO DIE FOR: FUNERAL CUSTOMS OF THE VICTORIAN AGE will feature speakers who will explore the origins of the funeral and mourning practices. They are as follows:

Tom Keels on the vanishing cemeteries in the Philadelphia area
Shirley Schwab on mourning jewelry and art
Walter Mehl Jr. with the origins of undertaking
Juanita Leisch (author of Who Wore What) and Stacy Hampton on Victorian widow’s
garb
Brenda Sullivan and Maggie White (The Gravestone Girls) with their unique way of
gravestone rubbing and the evolution of cemeteries
T. Scott Kreilick on tombstone preservation
And Bruce Stocking on the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and an evening walking
tour pertaining to headstone symbolism.

Food, displays and sales items will be available.

Advance tickets are available by calling 610-630-0912. Prices are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for seniors/students. All ticket sales will benefit Montgomery Cemetery which is owned by The Historical Society of Montgomery County. The W.S. Hancock Society is a non-profit organization.
