Coffin signs dont make careful drivers: study PDF Print E-mail

EDMONTON - Signs that mark intersections where people have died in car accidents don't change the behaviour of other drivers or pedestrians, a University of Alberta study says. The city has been putting coffin-shaped signs wherever someone has died in a car crash or where pedestrians have been hit, in hopes of reminding drivers to be more careful.

Researchers at the University of Alberta studied the intersections with signs and those without and found a similar number of people went through red and yellow lights at both sites. They also found pedestrians weren't more careful at the signed intersections.

Brad Smid, who runs the city's fatality sign program, says the program does more than just encourage people to drive more safely.

"In some cases, it helps the family get a sense of closure, or helps them grieve, knowing that the awareness is being raised," Smid said. "It does show the families that the city and the police are aware and concerned."
