Drivers hope their hearses are hits at Diamond stadium

LAKE ELSINORE, CA - A convoy of funeral and emergency wagons will roll through Lake Elsinore this weekend. The vehicles belong to a group of Lake Elsinore car collectors who belong to the International Phantom Coaches Hearse Club. The off-beat-car enthusiasts will show off their coffin carriages while following the club's motto: "We put the 'fun' back in 'funeral.'"

Members of the Lake Elsinore chapter and about 35 members of the national club will lead 15 hearses down Grand Avenue and around the lake to The Diamond stadium at about 4:45 p.m.

The procession will then cruise around the field shortly after 6 p.m. before the Lake Elsinore Storm's 7:05 p.m. baseball game.

"This is just another way for minor league baseball to draw people in with different ways," said Peter Bernstein, the Storm's assistant director of group sales. "It's an incentive for people to show what they're proud of. In this case, it's these cars."

Once the game has started, the cars will be displayed outside the stadium.

The hobby, though an odd concept to outsiders, is just a flair for classic yet strange cars, said KA Aguilar, a Lake Elsinore Phantom Coaches member and organizer of Saturday's event.

"I'm just a car enthusiast, not someone obsessed with death," Aguilar said. "We look at the afterlife with a more positive view by putting these vehicles to use."

Aguilar customized a 1990 Chevy Caprice Classic hearse by lowering the suspension, knocking out the center divider and adding rows of seats to the back compartment. Her license plate reads, "TOMBTYM."

She said her love for classic wagons sparked her interest in the funeral cars. Aguilar found her wagon when it first came out of service in South Carolina. Since converting the hearse, Aguilar said, passing motorists almost drive into her and neighbors still cast curious stares in her upscale neighborhood.

"I'm on the unique side, and at first, it creeped me out," Aguilar said. "But now it's the ultimate dead sled. Plus it holds a ton of groceries."
