Haunted History Tour set Saturday

Joe Leicht 09/21/2004 Halloween is more than a month away, but the Waterloo Museum Society and the Monroe County Historical Society think it's time to get in the spirit. The groups, which are collaborating their efforts to build a facility to house the Col. Edd Kueker collection and other local historic items, are sponsoring a haunted history tour of the Bellefontaine House, Moore Cemetery and the Cahokia-Kaskaskia Trail The event, free to the public although $10 donations will be acceptedÃ¢â‚¬â€is from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Tours will be at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. "We felt an event that invited the community to take a walk back in history would be valuable," said Marlene Luther, president of the Waterloo Museum Society. "We're providing a rare opportunity to visit the Bellfontaine home, walk the Kaskaskia-Cahokia trail and visit the Moore CemeteryÃ¢â‚¬â€each rich with history and seldom open to the public." The St. Louis Spirit Search Paranormal Investigation Team, a nationally known group that helped put St. Louis' Lemp Mansion on the regional map of allegedly haunted landmarks, will accompany participants on the tour. Legend says the Bellefontaine House and its environs have been the site of numerous paranormal sightings. "It isn't legend," said a local researcher and member of the Monroe County Historical Society, who declined to be identified. "Many of us have experienced it. People would think I'm was crazy, but these things have happened." The phenomenon the researcher said she has experienced include a white-garbed woman observed at an upstairs window, green candles that apparently materialized from thin air, tools that have apparently moved on their own and a chilly, penetrating breeze. "Just as a joke, I named the spirit Hermina," she said. "Later when I was doing some research, I uncovered the name Hermina. She was a lady who had twice loaned money on the house. I had never heard of that name before. I thought I was making it up." Luther said, "There are the spirits of the documented settlersÃ¢â‚¬â€Capt. James Moore, Mary Moore Robinson, Samuel McRoberts, John Whiteside. But there are many nameless Indians and pioneers who traveled the Cahokia-Kaskaskia Trail centuries ago. It'll be a rare opportunity to connect with the history, hope and hostility of the others." Other attractions include a country store with home-baked goods, snacks and beverages, flowers, decorations, pumpkins, chrysanthemums and Indian corn.
