'Slow learner' designs a hearse
South Africa News

Phalaborwa - Lommy Malesa describes himself as a slow learner, but this 23-year-old has the mind of an engineer.

He has designed a working model of what he calls a "perfect hearse".

Malesa's hearse has four seats for disabled people that can be raised above the vehicle by an in-built hydraulic lift.

"This way they can see what's happening at the funeral," he says.

Altogether, it can carry seven people and two caskets.

The model also has a hooter, working wipers, radio and a sound system with microphone and speakers.

Looking at the model, it is hard to believe that he dropped out of school in Grade 8.

"I am a slow learner and the school work was so heavy on me," he says.

Malesa, who lives in Lulekani township near Phalaborwa, can rig a bunch of wires, cardboard and spare parts to build perfectly working models of almost anything.

His first design was a radio he built in 1996, and his teachers were so impressed with it that they used it at school.

"Even though it was made of cardboard and spare parts, it was so beautiful and sleek," says Lommy.

He'd like to work in the motor industry one day, if he's given the chance.

"My knowledge is kept within me due to a lack of money and resources," he says. "I just need a one-month trial to demonstrate my skills and put forward my ideas." - Newsfirst
