Plans are under way to turn a city’s graveyards into a tourist trail.

Council chiefs hope the graves of famous men and women in Salford, Greater Manchester, will be a hit with locals and visitors to the area.

Among those buried in the city are Busby Babe Eddie Coleman, who died in the Munich air disaster, Charge of the Light Brigade veteran Ferdinand Stanley and Prince Lobengula of South Africa.
The £32,000 heritage trail will give information about significant graves and help protect plants and creatures flourishing in the cemeteries.

Councillor Maureen Lea said: “Salford’s cemeteries are a national treasure trove and we want to celebrate them.

“Cemeteries are places which are a focus for natural, architectural and community heritage, and should be treated with the great respect they deserve.”

Other graves of interest include that of Joseph Brotherton, who became Salford MP in 1832 and was instrumental in making Salford the first municipal authority in Britain to establish a library, museum and art gallery.

The resting places of Halle Orchestra founder Sir Charles Halle and local hero Mark Addy, who saved 53 people from drowning in the River Irwell, will also be highlighted.

Work will start on the heritage trail in the summer at the Grade II-listed Weaste cemetery where more than 332,000 people have been buried since it opened in 1857.

Small signs will give visitors information about graves of interest, and it is hoped the scheme will be rolled out to other churchyards and cemeteries in Salford.
