Moonlight Plan for Monument To Love PDF Print E-mail

AUTHORITIES in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh want to reopen India's world famous monument to love, the white marble Taj Mahal, for public viewing on full moon nights, officials said today. "We are optimistic about the idea and as night viewing of the Taj would boost tourism, we stand in its favour," D. K. Burman, joint director of the state's tourism department, said.

Excursions to the Taj at night have been discontinued for about two decades due to threats posed by various Indian insurgent groups.

Agra's local administrator, Niteshwar Kumar, said the paramilitary Central Industrial Security Force had been tasked with drawing up a plan to protect the Taj from attack should it reopen for night viewing.

"We are ... hopeful that night viewing of Taj will be a possibility in the days ahead," Kumar said.

"We could have special tickets at the Taj for full moon nights and entry could be restricted," he added.

But tourists hoping to head to Agra for a night view of the breathtaking 17th century mausoleum will have to await a green light from India's Supreme Court, which has to decide the issue.

The Taj was built by heart-broken Moghul emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved second wife who died during childbirth.

More than 10,000 artisans toiled for two decades to construct the mausoleum, which is visited by hundreds of thousands of people each year.

Have you decided on eternal repose?

To fear death, my friends, is only to think ourselves wise, without being wise: for it is to think that we know what we do not know. For anything that men can tell, death may be the greatest good that can happen to them: but they fear it as if they knew quite well that it was the greatest of evils. And what is this but that shameful ignorance of thinking that we know what we do not know?
